KVPAC Doubles in Size

KVPAC Grand Opening Katy Visual Performing Arts Center celebrated Saturday the grand opening of its newly renovated 4,200-square-foot second building. The expansion doubled the size of its available space. The addition was formerly the main office space for the Great Southwest Equestrian Center Complex and the Artful Home Antique Store. The expansion opens up rehearsal space for community theater programs and gives preschool programs room to expand to five days per week.

“The new building houses our new expanded PreK program, visual arts department, storybook stage and our executive and administrative offices,” marketing director Lisa Connolly said. “Our original building is now dedicated solely to our performing arts department, 180-seat theatre, box office and production offices. “Now because we acquired this building, we can offer two-, three- or five-day options for preschoolers. They’ll get a chance to learn more things and do more activities. It’s not like a day-care center. The kids are learning their science and math through arts and music.”

Books Alive provided entertainment during the grand opening and children of all ages had the chance to visit and have tea with princes and princesses from their favorite classic fairy tales. Others were able to help pirates find their buried treasures. Raffles, face painting and crafts were also part of the festivities.

KVPAC’s board president Patti Lacy cut the ceremonial ribbon of the new building and said this was a blessing that will make the center more active. “It’s always a growing theme around here and after eight years, we’re not really surprised anymore,” KVPAC founding member Kristin Miller said. “The community just keeps stepping up and we’re very grateful to them.”

More than 1,000 guests walked through the doors of the new building, still located at 2501 S. Mason Road in Room 290. According to Connolly, the expansion was made possible monetarily by KVPAC’s board of trustees who spearheaded a capital campaign for the last five years. “The expansion has increased our overhead considerably (double rent, utilities, etc.) so the need to continue fundraising in order to keep up with expenses is now imperative.”

The expansion itself was executed by Meridian Constructors, LLC, a local commercial construction company, owned by Kyle Cook. “Kyle won our bid to renovate the interior of the new building and make some well needed adjustments to our existing one,” Connolly said. “He then proceeded to donate over $20,000 of supplies, materials and labor to the project.

“It was amazing. We as artists promote green living as much as possible. Kyle and his team understood the importance of this with us and succeeded in utilizing many recyclable materials on this project. We are very pleased and proud of the expansion.” Before the expansion, 12 core staff members were sharing the same small office with only two workstations. “We had to schedule time to schedule time, if you know what I mean,” Connolly said. “Prior to that, the office space was a narrow closet, to which one sitting in the center had to announce in advance when she wanted to leave the room, so everyone else could file out first to let her out.

“Let’s just say we have come a long way. Students are also in awe of the space and how much more we are able to offer as a result. It has been a great summer so far and we strive to make even more changes and improvements to meet the communities needs.”
